Saturday: Stratford-upon-Avon

Last day in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The Library

Unknown Building, but love the architecture!
Early that morning we visited the Guildhall and School where Shakespeare's father, John, was an alderman and later bailiff for the town and where William had all his formal schooling.

Upstairs school room - possibly same layout and furniture as in 1590's
This is a school trip, so everyone sat down on centuries old benches for a lesson in Latin, just as Shakespeare would have done.

Do you see a familiar name? All the tables and desks were covered like this.

During the tour we not only got to see the classrooms and halls, but also sat through a short latin lesson and worked on the same benches used during Shakespeare's day. It is still an active school and civic center, where the curriculum includes Latin and a study of the ancient Greek and Roman stories that were taught in the middle-ages.

Door in the chapel next door to the Guild Hall
The Chapel next to the Guild Hall - in the 1590's it's walls were whitewashed to hide the Catholic type imagery, which can still be seen through the whitewash.

After the tour we had a short break for last minute shopping (or lunch) and then back to the train station to catch a ride back to London. Once back in London I caught up on laundry and some homework.
